The State of the IT Staffing Industry in 2021

In the past, business trends could take years –– or even decades –– to fully develop and play out. However, as the previous few years have shown, entire industries can undergo seismic changes over a very short period of time. That is certainly true of the IT staffing industry. Obviously, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a massive impact on the economy at large and, in turn, many businesses’ capacity to hire new IT employees. Now, though, as we enter the summer of 2021, it’s worth taking a step back to review the current state of IT staffing and how it may change in the months and years to come.

IT Staffing Growth

It’s no surprise that IT staffing is an industry that tracks closely with the trajectory of the economy. After all, when businesses experience growth, they launch new projects, products, initiatives, and services. And these new projects require IT support.

By contrast, during the majority of 2020, the US experienced an economic recession. This meant that many business leaders had to find ways to cut costs and reduce expenses to deal with the challenges of COVID-19. Unfortunately, this led to a decrease in IT staffing needs while many projects were put on hold or canceled. (For a broader look at the impact of the pandemic, consider that unemployment at the height of COVID-19 was significantly greater than unemployment even during the 2008 recession.)

The good news is that the economic forecasts are much rosier for 2021 than 2020. Over the first quarter of 2021, the GDP increased at a 6.4% rate, and positive economic trends like job growth and retail sales are expected to continue throughout the year.

IT Staffing Challenges

Just as businesses needed to rapidly scale down in 2020, many will have to scale up dramatically in 2021. However, rapid growth presents numerous challenges to business leaders –– IT staffing chief among them. Indeed, as companies grow, they often require more diverse IT support. They may also need collaboration and coordination between IT support team members. Worst of all, typical staffing companies hold basically no accountability for their candidates and thus produce low-quality candidates that aren’t good fits for their clients. Combine businesses with an urgent need for new IT employees with staffing companies that push poor candidates and you have a recipe for disaster.
